NAHO and Health Canada Launch Nationwide Aboriginal Youth Art Contest on Environmental Health - Year after year, environmental health issues are having a greater impact on Canada's Aboriginal youth. To bring attention to this issue and to provide Aboriginal youth an opportunity to express their views on environmental health, the National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO), with support from Health Canada, is launching an art contest for Aboriginal youth. “Happy Kids, healthy kids!” art contest - The Canadian Paediatric Society is inviting kids from across Canada to participate in its “Happy kids, health kids!” art contest. Children and youth are asked to draw a picture of something they like to do that keeps them happy and healthy. Entries received by May 5 will be entered in the early bird draw for a Chapters gift card. Final entry deadline is June 15. See contest entry form for details. Deadline: June 15, 2012

The Outward Bound Canada - RBC National Youth Leadership Scholarship is available for Aboriginal youth (First Nations, Metis and Inuit) and new Canadian youth aged 15 – 19. Priority will be given to youth who are actively playing a leadership role within their community.
First Nations and Inuit launch new national fitness initiative - Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) President Mary Simon, together with champions of Indigenous fitness and wellness from across Canada, today announced the launch of an online, community-based physical activity and wellness initiative aimed at improving health and fitness among Indigenous communities in Canada.

Research Survey: Indian Residential Schools - In the current study, we are hoping to identify additional factors associated with well-being among children of Residential School Survivors and among Aboriginal adults whose parents did not attend Residential School. This study has received clearance by the Carleton University Psychology Research Ethics Board.
c.a.r.e.Prevention Educator Training - Free Training Opportunity for Primary School Teachers in Aboriginal Communities - c.a.r.e. is a personal safety program for children aged 5-9 that has been designed for delivery in a learning environment over a 6 week period. It aims to help prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation by focusing on body ownership, appropriate vs. inappropriate touch and simple safety rules. Successful participants will be certified to deliver the c.a.r.e. kit information to children ages 5 – 9 y/o. Participants will explore violence as a multi-faceted, world wide problem and definitions of emotional, physical, neglect, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, bullying and harassment. The consequences of violence against children and youth and frameworks to protect children and youth will be discussed. Participants will learn how to handle disclosures and that there are Ten Steps to creating safe environments for children and youth.

Ethnobiology Letters: New Online, Open-access, Peer Reviewed Journal for Short Papers - The Society of Ethnobiology introduces a new online, open-access, peer reviewed journal for short papers (http://www.ethnobiology.org/ethnobiology-letters) called Ethnobiology Letters (EBL). The Society now publishes a full complement of journals headlined by the Journal of Ethnobiology and complemented by Contributions in Ethnobiology for monograph length publications and EBL for short papers.
