The Conference was organized by Population Data BC in partnership with the Canadian Population Health Initiative of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

Documentary “Crisis on Tap: First Nations Water for Life”

New documentary released Crisis on Tap: First Nations Water for Life, produced by the Centre for Aboriginal Health Research at the University of Victoria and Cedarwood Productions

The documentary takes a critical look at the reality of this environmental public health challenge, as expressed by First Nations peoples living in Canada. The Centre for Aboriginal Health Research produced this 30-minute film in follow-up to our international Consensus Conference on Small Water Systems Management for the Promotion of Indigenous Health (see conference video below), held at UVic in March 2010.

The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences has released a report entitled Canadians Making a Difference: The Expert Panel on Canada’s Strategic Role in Global Health. This report, authored by an Expert Panel of leading Canadian and international global health experts, is based on a year-long evidence-based assessment process that was completed earlier this year.

The Centre for Aboriginal Health Research presented this 3-day conference in collaboration with Network Environments for Aboriginal Research BC (NEARBC), and the Water and Aquatic Sciences Research Programme. Timed to coincide with UN World Water Day, this conference brought together participants from Canada and abroad for presentations and panel sessions.

Four major themes addressed were: science and technology; government policy; traditional knowledge and spirituality; and Indigenous politics and advocacy.

A dialogue on the Provincial Health Officer’s 2nd Report on the Health and Well-Being of Aboriginal People in British Columbia

Conference date: 24-25 September 2009
Location: First People’s House, University of Victoria, British Columbia

Network Environments for Aboriginal Research BC and the Centre for Aboriginal Health Research hosted this 2-day conference including presentations from Aboriginal Health Authorities and a panel of Aboriginal health researchers. The conference centered on a discussion on the recent Provincial Health Officer’s Report on the Health and Well-being of Aboriginal People in BC and future directions in Aboriginal health research. The conference was a unique opportunity for networking between community members, policy makers, and researchers.

Welcoming remarks were provided by His Honour, The Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Dr. Evan Adams, Aboriginal Health Physician Advisor, provided the keynote address.
