I am writing to announce that Dr. Ian Graham will be leaving the position of Vice President, Knowledge Translation and Public Outreach, effective March 31, 2012. As many of you are aware, Ian has been on interchange with CIHR from the University of Ottawa. He will be resuming his academic career in the School of Nursing at the University of Ottawa and at the Clinical Epidemiology Program of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
During his five years at CIHR, Ian has significantly transformed how we view and fund knowledge translation in Canada and abroad. CIHR is now recognized world-wide as a leader in the funding and practice of knowledge translation through programs that advance integrated knowledge translation research as well as the rapid dissemination and application of research findings for the benefit of Canadians. Under his leadership, CIHR was the first in the country and one of the first in the world, to implement an Open Access Policy that has been greatly facilitated through innovations such as the creation of PubMed Central Canada. His commitment to providing better information on the impact of investing in health research led to a new research reporting system that will generate valuable information for years to come. Under his direction, CIHR published a groundbreaking framework of Citizen Engagement which has since been implemented across our programs.
On a personal note, I will miss Ian’s thoughtfulness, creativity, integrity and tireless dedication to advancing, in a most profound way, our understanding and support of knowledge translation.
As noted, KT is a fundamental component of CIHR’s mandate and I will be discussing with Science Council and the Executive Management Committee how best to build on Ian’s significant accomplishments as we move forward. Please join me in thanking Ian for his outstanding contributions to CIHR and to the science of knowledge translation and in wishing him the very best success in his future endeavors.

J’ai le regret de vous annoncer que Dr Ian Graham quittera son poste de vice-président à l’application des connaissances et à la sensibilisation du public le 31 mars 2012. Le Dr Graham était aux IRSC dans le cadre d’un échange avec l’Université d’Ottawa. Il reprend donc sa carrière universitaire à l’École des sciences infirmières de l’Université d’Ottawa et au Programme d’épidémiologie clinique de l’Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital d’Ottawa.
Durant ses cinq années aux IRSC, le Dr Graham a transformé considérablement la vision et le financement de l’application des connaissances au Canada et à l’étranger. Ainsi, la réputation mondiale que les IRSC ont acquise comme chef de file du financement et de la pratique de l’application des connaissances se fonde sur des programmes favorisant la recherche en application des connaissances intégrée et contribuant à accélérer la dissémination et l’application des résultats de la recherche pour les Canadiens. Sous la direction du Dr Graham, les IRSC ont été les premiers au pays et parmi les premiers au monde à établir une politique sur l’accès aux résultats de la recherche dont la mise en place a été grandement facilitée par des innovations comme la création de PubMed Central Canada. Sa détermination à améliorer l’information sur l’impact de l’investissement dans la recherche en santé a mené à la création du Système de rapport sur la recherche qui fournira de précieux renseignements pour les années à venir. C’est aussi sous sa direction que les IRSC ont publié un cadre révolutionnaire d’engagement des citoyens qui a depuis été mis en place dans tous les programmes.
Pour ma part, ce sont l’amabilité, la créativité, l’intégrité et la volonté inébranlable du Dr Graham de faire progresser notre façon de comprendre et d’appuyer l’application des connaissances qui me manqueront.
Compte tenu de l’importance capitale de l’application des connaissances pour le mandat des IRSC, je discuterai avec les membres du conseil scientifique et du comité de la haute direction pour établir les meilleures façons de mettre à profit les grandes réalisations du Dr Graham. Joignez-vous à moi pour remercier le Dr Graham de ses contributions exceptionnelles aux IRSC et à la science de l’application des connaissances, et pour lui souhaiter un vif succès dans la poursuite de ses projets.
